Welcome to Coos Bay, Oregon

What once began as a makeshift encampment for a group of shipwrecked sailors when their ship “The Captain Lincoln” sank, Coos Bay is the State of Oregon’s main commercial hub for shipping, and has been since the 1850’s. The area has seen a lot of change in its time; the city was originally called Camp Castaway (by those shipwrecked sailors who originally “landed” here), and then was called Marshfield, after a Massachusetts town of the same name. It wasn’t until 1944 that the residents of the area voted to change the name of the town to simply Coos Bay, after the bay that had been the reason for the explosive growth of the area.

Today, Coos Bay is still a big commercial center for all of Southwestern Oregon, and is home to many families that have migrated here from all over the country. The beautiful emerald forests surrounding Coos Bay is the biggest draw of residents to the area, while its mild climate also attracts visitors and residents alike.
